How to Become A Dog Walk Master

Being able to walk your dog confidently is something that all dog owners dream of, but it really isn’t as difficult as you may think. Contrary to popular belief, even the most stubborn pooch can be reigned in and learn to understand that you are the one in charge of this activity, not them. Here at CK9 Training, we specialise in dog training in Kingston, so we’ve seen quite a few feisty pups that pull relentlessly on a lead when taken on a walk. Here are some of our favourite tips to achieving a stress-free walk! Use a Shorter Lead If your dog is used to having full control of how far away he can stray from you while on a lead, he will be harder to control. Using a short lead puts you, the handler, back in the driving seat and gives you full control over the dog. Having your dog closer to you allows you to communicate clearer as your dog will be able to hear you clearer. It also gives you an immediate opportunity to reward or correct your dogs behaviour as you walk. If your dog is ahead of you, he will see himself as the leader. He will pull you along because he feels like he is in complete control of the situation, which is similar to how wild dog packs behave in the wild; the leader is always at the front, leading the rest of the group along. You should always be the one leading this “pack”. Make sure you keep your dog by your side, of even behind you slightly, and we guarantee that there will be less pulling.

 Make Enough Time Dogs need to burn off energy, and going for a walk is a great way to steadily do just that. Make sure you are making enough time to get out and burn that pent-up energy; around 30 minute to a full hour every day at least. Not only will your pup be sufficiently tired after the walk, but you will have given them a good work out too, making them less boisterous.
