Dogs are, as everyone says, man’s best friend. Because of the interactions and bonds produced between humans and dogs, there are a lot of studies that have been conducted to try and understand the psychology of dogs and how they make humans feel. It turns out (as if we didn’t know!) that they are extraordinary creatures.
Dogs Can Detect Seizures and Cancer
Dogs have an incredibly sensitive nose; their noses are between 10,000 and 10,000,000 times more sensitive than a human’s nose, depending on the dog species. Because of this, dogs are able to detect seizures, low blood sugar levels and even cancer within humans. One study found that trained dogs are able to detect prostate cancer with an accuracy of 90% by smelling the participant’s urine.
How Smart Are Dogs?
One study by a leading canine researcher suggests that a dog’s intelligence is at the same level as a two-year-old child’s intelligence. This means that dogs are able to understand over 150 words, can count up to five and notice simple errors. They are also particularly good at solving spatial problems, such as locating hidden items, operating latches and even finding the quickest route to a certain place.
When it comes to the same species, the most intelligent breeds of dog are border collies, poodles and German shepherds. Another study also suggests that dogs respond to emotional sounds in a similar way to humans. This means that, if a human is crying, a dog will interpret that in a similar way, or they will interpret a human crying as a dog whining.
