Reactive Dog Training in Surrey and South London

Aggressive dog lunging and barking

If your dog barks, lunges, freezes or pulls towards other dogs or people, you are not dealing with a badly behaved dog. You are dealing with a dog who feels unsafe, and that is something we can work with together. Our reactivity programmes help your dog move from fearful and overwhelmed to calm and confident, using kind, science-led methods across Surrey and South London.

You Know the Feeling

There is a particular kind of tension that comes with walking a reactive dog. You scan the path ahead before your dog does. You change direction when you see another dog or person in the distance. You have started walking at quieter times, or in quieter places, or sometimes not at all, because it ends up being so stressful!

It is exhausting, and it can feel isolating, because from the outside people see the barking and the lunging, and they make assumptions. What they do not see is a dog who is frightened, and an owner who is doing everything they can to manage a situation that feels unpredictable.

This is what we help with. Reactivity is one of the most common reasons owners come to CK9 Training, and it is one of the areas our trainers and behaviourists work in most often. With the right approach, the right environment and a clear plan, dogs who currently react with fear can genuinely learn to feel calm around other dogs and people.

What Dog Reactivity Actually Is

Reactivity is an over the top response to something your dog finds threatening or overwhelming. Most commonly this shows up as barking, lunging, growling or pulling towards other dogs, people, traffic, cyclists or specific triggers your dog has learned to associate with feeling unsafe.

It is important to understand that reactivity is almost always rooted in emotion rather than disobedience. A reactive dog is not trying to be difficult or dominant. The behaviour is usually driven by fear, frustration, or a lack of confidence, and the barking and lunging are simply your dog trying to create distance from something that worries them.

Because the behaviour is emotional, the solution has to address the emotion. Suppressing the reaction without changing how your dog feels tends to make things worse over time. Our reactivity programmes are built to change the underlying emotional response, so your dog is not just behaving differently, they are genuinely feeling differently.

How Our Reactivity Programmes Work

Every reactive dog is different, so we do not use a one size fits all method. Your programme begins with a full assessment where we look at your dog's history, triggers, body language and threshold distances, and we build a plan around what your individual dog needs.

From there, our approach focuses on three things working together. First, we help you understand and read your dog so you can predict and prevent reactions before they happen. Second, we use positive reinforcement and behaviour change techniques to gradually shift your dog's emotional response to their triggers. Third, we give you the practical handling skills and confidence to manage real world walks without dread.

Progress with reactivity is built in careful, controlled steps. We work at a distance and intensity your dog can cope with, then slowly and systematically build from there, so your dog is always learning in a state where they can actually take the information in.

'We have a giant breed and spent ages looking for the right trainers to help with his reactivity. We thought all we needed was help in stopping him doing certain things. What we got was an actual relationship with our dog that is calmer, more trusting and much easier to understand.

Virginia and Laura helped us see what was really going on underneath his behaviour, rather than just treating the outward reactions. They gave us practical, realistic guidance that worked for him as an individual dog, and helped us feel much more confident handling him day to day.

Their approach was kind, thoughtful and never judgmental. That mattered hugely, especially with a large dog where every walk or difficult moment can feel very visible and high-pressure. They helped us build better communication with him rather than just trying to control him.

They were also incredibly kind and flexible when we had to reschedule sessions after our older dog became very unwell. Their compassion during that time meant a great deal.

We’re very grateful for everything they’ve done for our family. I would highly recommend CK9 Training to anyone looking for knowledgeable, compassionate trainers who genuinely understand dogs and the people trying their best to help them.'

Our Private Training Field in Banstead

One of the biggest challenges with reactivity training is control. On a normal walk you cannot decide how close another dog comes, how long it stays, or how it behaves, and that unpredictability makes it very hard for a frightened dog to learn.

This is why we use a private, secure training field in Banstead for our first in person session with you. Having a private field means we can control the entire environment, including distance, duration and the exact level of challenge your dog is exposed to at any moment.

It also allows us to run controlled stooge dog setups. A stooge dog is a calm, well chosen helper dog used in a carefully managed way, so your dog can practise being around another dog at a distance they can handle, without the situation tipping into a full reaction. This kind of structured, repeatable practice is extremely difficult to recreate on a public walk, and it is one of the reasons our reactivity work is so effective.

What You Can Expect To Change

Owners often come to us hoping their dog will simply stop barking. What they usually find is that something deeper changes. Walks stop being something to brace for. You start to relax, which your dog feels, and that calmer state becomes part of how you both move through the world together.

A dog who has learned to feel safe around other dogs and people is a dog who can finally enjoy being a dog again, and an owner who is no longer managing constant stress gets their walks, and a good deal of their daily life, back.

We will be honest with you throughout. Reactivity work takes commitment and consistency, and timelines vary depending on your dog. What we can promise is a clear plan, methods that are kind and effective, and trainers who genuinely understand what you are going through.
