The Look Of Love

Devoted dog. Besotted owner – it’s a familiar combination.

Man has always had a unique relationship with canines. And now scientists have got the evidence to prove what us dog owners have known all along – dogs really are a man’s best friend.

The Eyes Have It

The average dog spends much of their time gazing lovingly into their owner’s eyes and us owners – whether we know it or not – spend a lot of time looking back too. Yet there’s more to this gaze than meets the eye!

Scientists have discovered that, when owners and their dogs lock eyes, the levels of oxytocin – the so called ‘love hormone’ – increases in the bloodstream of both man and dog.

What’s even more remarkable is that this is the same mechanism that occurs when a mother stares into her baby’s eyes – pretty incredible, right?!

So what does this all mean? Well, the team behind this groundbreaking discovery think that our clever canine pals may have found a way to tap into a uniquely human bonding mechanism – ensuring that we love and care for them.

This explains why we find those puppy dog eyes so irresistible!

Puppy Love

That said, it’s also a two way street, and the love we feel for our dogs is mutual too. Whilst a dog’s gaze can stimulate the release of oxytocin in the brains of their owner – prompting them to want to interact more with their canine companion – this also leads to an oxytocin spike in their pooch too! This may explain why our dogs express such devotion to us in return.

Based on these amazing findings, the authors of the study think they may have stumbled upon a very powerful mechanism by which dogs win our hearts and we win theirs in return!

So the next time your dog is staring at you longingly with those puppy eyes, it might just be his way of telling you that he loves you – either that or he’d quite fancy a bite of whatever it is you’re eating!
