Spotlight On: Pugs

Here at CK9 Training, we adore all breeds of dog, whether big or small! We recently took a closer look at the German Shepherd – a dog which is considered as being one of Britain’s most loved.

This month we’re taking a closer look at the adorable pug – a breed that has become extremely popular over the last few years.

Pug Characteristics

If you’re looking for a toy size dog with a cute squashed face and eyes that can make you give up your whole dinner, never mind the last mouthful, then you’re most likely looking for a pug. Their curly tail, folded over ears and round face will make your heart melt every time you look at them, and what’s more, pugs are sensitive souls; when they’ve found a ‘forever home’, they’ll love you as much as you love them.

The pug is an ideal family dog; they love cuddles and praise most of all and a telling off is likely to hurt their feelings. As small as they may be, they have a lot of love to give. Happy around adults and children of all ages, the only thing to be aware of is rough play when children are younger, as the pug’s small stature can make it vulnerable to injury.

Visits to the Vet

When it comes to health concerns, pugs do have a few common issues that you should consider before buying. Their flat squashed muzzle can cause breathing complications such as wheezing and snoring, although this shouldn’t require investigation or treatment.

Due to the position of their noses, pugs are not the best at regulating temperature, which means they are susceptible to overheating in hot weather or catching colds in the winter. Their wrinkles also need regular cleaning to prevent sores and their eyes are open to a variety of conditions, including scratches, ulcers and cataracts because of the way they bulge.

Should You Choose a Pug?

If you want loyalty and unconditional love from a dog that can be easily lifted on to your lap for a cuddle, you can’t go wrong with a pug. A hit with everyone, these sweet little shadows will never leave your side. Pugs are the sweet, furry, wrinkly baby you’ve been searching for!
